It goes without saying that cars are 2 tons of rolling steal powered to go in speed excess of what the human body is capable of handling, which was the unfortunate case for a driver this morning on the way to a local car meet.

Around 7:30AM on August 6th, 2016, Henry H. Sterne behind the wheel of his yellow Honda S2000 convertible took a turn at a high rate of speed on Walker Road in Great Falls, Virginia causing the vehicle to lose control and careen off the road into a tree stump that launched the vehicle in a barrel roll 70 feet into a nearby yard belonging to a private residence. Going by Enrique Estrellas on Facebook, Henry was a prominent member of the local car community heavily involving in photography of his two vehicles – the S2000 and Mercedes AMG.

Owner of the home where the vehicle came to rest, Joanna Web and her husband who wrote on the Facebook page:

“This is for the young man who died on our front lawn this morning on Walker Road in Great Falls (not Reston) at 7:30am, no doubt going to cars and coffee. His car became a projectile that traveled 80 ft across my yard, and then some, possibly to avoid hitting a deer at high speed. No one knows exactly at this time. My husband and I frequently see and hear cars going what must be upwards of 60-90 mph past our house, specifically between 5:30-7:30am on Saturday mornings. On Walker Road (25 mph zone)! And our driveway is on a blind spot, like many others on Walker Road. Deer are active and on the move crossing Walker Road at the same time at many spots. This is all the wrong ingredients for public safety. Feeling very sad for this young man and his family and friends and am concerned about the safety of our neighborhood on Saturday mornings.”

With local news outlet, Fairfax County Police Department News breaking the story soon after it happened, initial reports were that the accident took place in Reston. It was later confirmed to have taken place on Walker Road in the Great Falls area. Regarding the Honda S2000 crash, the PD news website writes:

“Officers responded to the 1100 block of Walker Road in the Great Falls area on Saturday, August 6, around 7:32 a.m. for the report of a single-vehicle crash. Officers located a yellow 2004 convertible that had been involved in the crash. The initial investigation determined that an adult male was driving the vehicle northbound on Walker Road, when for an unknown reason, the vehicle left the roadway, hit a dirt berm, overturned several times, and came to rest.

The driver of the vehicle, a 28-year-old male, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and pronounced deceased by medical staff. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

Preliminary information suggests that speed appears to be a factor in this crash. The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Henry H. Sterne, of Alexandria, and next of kin has been notified. Detectives from the Crash Reconstruction Unit responded and the investigation is on-going.”

The incident isn’t the first time the roads in Great Falls have taken headlines. In April of this year, a Ferrari 599 met its demise when piloted by a prominent political figure from an European county, the vehicle rear ended a tractor trailer. No one in that accident was injured seriously, however, the car appeared to be totaled.
